Why Dental Crowns and Build-Ups Matter
If you’ve been told you need a crown or a build-up, you might be wondering exactly what they are and why they’re so important. Simply put, crowns and build-ups are treatments used to restore damaged teeth, making them stronger and helping them function like they used to.
A crown is a cap that fits over a tooth, covering it entirely. It’s used when a tooth has been weakened by decay, trauma, or a large filling. Crowns are made of porcelain (which blends well with your natural teeth). They’re designed to protect the tooth and restore its strength, so you can chew properly without worrying about it breaking.
Sometimes, before a crown can be placed, a build-up is needed. This is when there is added to fill in the spaces where tooth structure has been lost, making the tooth strong enough to hold the crown securely in place. Without this step, the crown might not fit well, and the tooth could be more vulnerable to further damage.
Both crowns and build-ups are often necessary if a tooth is seriously damaged. If you delay getting this treatment, there can be risks:
-More Decay and Damage: Without a crown, a weakened tooth can continue to decay or crack. This could lead to pain or even tooth loss.
-Infection: If a tooth that needs a crown has already had a root canal or is cracked, it can become infected. A crown helps protect it from bacteria getting in.
-Difficulty Eating: A damaged tooth may make it hard to chew, affecting your diet and quality of life.
Crowns and build-ups help keep your teeth strong, healthy, and looking good. If you don’t get the treatment done on time, you risk further damage or even losing the tooth altogether. Not only will it prevent bigger problems down the road, but it’ll also keep you smiling confidently.
